Switzerland Spring First Surprise At South Africa 2010.

We had to wait 6 days here at World Cup Spread Betting for our first major upset, but when it landed it sure was a big one. Tournament favourites Spain were beaten 1-0 by Switzerland. Despite having the lion’s share of possession the Spanish were unable to find a goal despite the abundance of striking talent that they were able to start the match with. Add to that Torres who came off the bench the nearest they came was a thunderous shot from Alonso which hit the bar. If you had a few quid on Spain losing or Switzerland winning your SportsSpread account will be handsomely in profit this morning. The other big factor now for Spain is the possibility that they may not win their group and if they finish in second place and Brazil win there group the two pre tournament favourites will square up in the last 16. A tasty match, but a pity to lose a major team at such early stage.
Yesterdays other matches saw hosts South Africa go down 3-0 to Uruguay, a result which means they have a real struggle to progress into the knockout stages. If they don’t it will be the first time a host nation has failed to get out of the group stages. The other match ended with a 1-0 victory for Chile against Honduras. That leaves them top of their group level with Spanish conquerors Switzerland.
Today’s first match and early bird special over at Sportsspread is the clash of Argentina and South Korea so its spread free for the hour before the game on the top 5 markets. It will be interesting to see if Diego’s boys have improved from the first match. Next up is Greece v Nigeria which will complete the second round of matches in group B before we return to group A for France v Mexico. A winner in this match could have a huge outcome on who goes through and who goes home. I’m sure supporters here in Ireland will all have there sombreros on for that one.
And finally today Diego Maradonna has had a bit of a go at Pele and Platini. He said Pele should go back to the museum after the Brazilian implied that Maradonna only took the job because he needed the money. Of Platini he said “We all know how the French are, and Platini is French and believes he is better than the rest”. He then said that Pele and Platini should go out and try out the Jabulani ball that is causing so much stress and find out if it is a good one or a bad one and stop talking rubbish about me. Maradonna doesn’t seem to have a problem with the ball as he was show crashing a shot into the net from outside the area during a training session. The keeper hadn’t a hope of getting it. The BBC then showed it as their golden moment of the day. It’s a wonder he is not on the bench to play a cameo role in case they get into trouble. Now wouldn’t that be a sight to see.
